Scoring big time
Salmon flies are the most enigmatic of all the lures used in sport fishing. Used to deceive a game fish, which on its spawning run doesn’t feed, it makes one wonder what these flies represent.
Basic rules of playing salmon
Since I began salmon fishing almost 40 years ago, I've hooked and played hundreds of fish. I've landed them on long rods such as two-handed 14-footers, right down to six-foot trout rods.
Another 'time' in P.E.I.
A trip to our sister Atlantic province of Prince Edward Island in search of Canada geese a few years ago was - and remains - one of the most exhilarating hunts I have ever experienced.
'Guaranteed moose'
“Write in ‘Area 16’ on your application; it’s up around our cabin and you’re guaranteed to get a moose up there.” Len Durdle sounded pretty convincing and - seeing that I was in pool 2 for the big game draw and was pretty sure of getting an opportunity to hunt in the area of my first choice - I went along with his suggestion and sent away my application.
Nothing to it
Even though Wanda and I have gone on numerous fishing trips with our husbands since we were married, they still thought it was a bit unusual that we wanted to fish for a couple of days on our own last summer...
Hunting the Humber
Mention the Humber River to the sportsmen and women of Newfoundland and Labrador and invariably discussions on salmon fishing dominate the conversation.
This should come as no surprise, for the Humber is arguably one of the best Atlantic salmon rivers in the world, stretching from its source high in the mountains of Gros Morne National Park and weaving its way into the Bay of Islands near Corner Brook. With over 26,000 salmon in the system each summer, anglers have literally hundreds of places to test their wares against the king of game fish.
The Hare's Ear Nymph
There was a time when fly fishing for trout was strictly a late-summer affair for me. Following my father's tradition, I would open the season with baited hook and turn to flies only as the heat and dryness of summer drove worms out of reach. I often attached a fly above my spinner, but that's not really fly fishing, is it?
Flowers River
The highlight of our September trip to Flowers River Lodge in Labrador? Hmmm, let me see... I’ve been asked this very question on numerous occasions since returning, so now it’s time to sit down and give it some serious thought...
